Takagism and Early Escape Rooms
Have you ever wondered who came up with the idea for “Escape Room” experiences? While there are some disputes of their origins, many credit Japanese game developer Toshimitsu Takagi.
Crimson Room
Takagi released an online puzzle game titled “Crimson Room” in 2004. The game threw you into a locked room and asked you to solve puzzles to escape. (Sound familiar?) Although some say that the game was a bit flawed, it pioneered the genre of “point and click” adventure games with a fixed camera angle, also known as “Takagism” in countries like China.
The First “Escape Game”
While Tagaki pioneered “Escape the Room” games online, Takao Kato hosted one of the first live “Escape Room” experiences. Kato was the founder of a Japanese magazine called “SCRAP”. After learning about Crimson Room from a friend, Kato was inspired to craft a live experience of his own! SCRAP continued to host many different escape games as the years went by, and eventually those ideas made it over to other countries.
The next time you play an online puzzle game or an Escape Room, you can thank innovators like Takagi and Kato. All it takes for a great idea to flourish is some inspiration and ingenuity!
